Scout Fair for Adventure

Nolan Ryan was one, so were George Bush, John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama...also Bill Gates, Walter Cronkite, Harrison Ford and George Strait. They are some of the men who were Boy Scouts. Houstonians can get a glimpse of the life a scout entails at the annual Scout Fair later today at Reliant Arena. Pat Hernandez tells us more.

"This is our 100 year anniversary of scouting, so we're real excited to showcase scouting to the community. The Scout Fair, it's focused around a display scouting in action, showing off scouting skills. We have a lot of things from a conservation and environmental perspective I think people would find very interesting and educational, and it's a lot of fun. There's a lot of fun, hands on activities for the public and for other scouts that are there at the fair."

The gathering is the largest in the country that showcases scouting in a fun and interactive way. Cub scouts, boy scouts, varsity team members and explorers from 16 Texas counties will get together for activities that include tower climbing, dutch oven cooking and pinewood derby racing. Carr says a lot of attention will be at the merit badge midway.

"Scouting has over a hundred merit badges, and we'll have 50 of those on display. There'll be separate booths and things like first aid, law, engineering, backpacking, and so there's various organizations, partners in the community, that will be participating. So, you'll be able to come out, talk to experts that can help share their insights on that particular topic with people."

Some 110 million American boys have taken the scouting oath. You can find more information on the Scout Fair at www.shac.org.
