KUHF Conversations: UH History Prof Examines New History Teaching Standards

A 30-day public comment period is now underway for the new standards on how history, social studies, government, and economics are taught in Texas public schools.
Late last week, the state Board of Education gave preliminary approval to the standards, which include a greater emphasis than before on certain conservative ideas, historical figures, and political organizations.
We wanted to know what a professional historian thinks about this. So KUHF's David Pitman sat down with Robert Zaretsky, a professor of French history in the University of Houston Honors College.
He recently wrote an op-ed piece on the debate over the standards that appeared in the
Houston Chronicle. David started the conversation by asking Zaretsky what one change to the history standards concerned him the most.
