The idea of this study is that you can go to the website county-health-rankings-dot-org, click "Texas" and then your county and get a snapshot of how healthy your county is compared to other Texas counties.
"If the residents of Harris County do that they'll see that their community ranks 58th out of all 221 ranked counties in Texas."
Dr. Patrick Remington is an Associate Dean of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin and one of the researchers.
The study is said to be the first time researchers have examined multiple factors that affect health such as obesity, smoking, alcohol use, access to primary care providers; crime graduation and unemployment rates; pollution levels and poverty.
Dr. Remington says Harris County is above average in most categories but not when it comes the category "Physical Environment"
"That's getting to the bottom of the list at 172nd and according to this report Harris ranks dead last in the quality of the physical environment from significant days of air pollution from fine particles and ozone."
Dr. Remington says county-health-rankings-dot-org is really a tool to allow you see how healthy your county is and, over the coming years to determine if progress has been made to improve your ranking.
