Houston's Airports Adapt Economically

2009 has been a tough year economically for most of the country's major airports. But the Houston Airport System has bucked the trend. Interim Director Eric Potts delivered the state of the airports address. He told a packed audience downtown how Houston's aviation industry has soared. Pat Hernandez has more.

The address at the Hilton Americas Hotel downtown was attended bythe Houston Airport System's network of business and government. It recognized the system's 24-billion dollar impact on Houston's economy.

"The state of the Houston airport system is dynamic."

That's Interim Houston aviation director Eric Potts. He told the audience that the HAS has managed to minimize the effects of the country's economic downturn. He says the system has added new airlines and new service at
Bush Airport. Potts says a boost came when Houston based Continental joined  forces with two dozen other airlines to increase destinations around the world.

"The Star Alliance increases Continental's global reach and the end result is a network that features almost 25-thousand daily flights to more than a thousand airports in 171 countries. Or as Continental inbound CEO Jeff Smisek said earlier this month, 'If we can't get you there, then you might want to reconsider going'."

Former president George HW Bush was on hand to help the airport named after him celebrate its 40th birthday:

"I have to say when I was first informed that the Intercontinental Airport would be renamed Bush Airport, I was a bit concerned. I was worried I'd start getting a lot of calls about the airport — suggestions for making it better. The other day they named an aircraft carrier for me, and that was a huge thrill, but I don't think can add up to the thrill if having this fantastic international airport bear our name."
