The energy industry has been finding that recruiting and retaining women—and promoting them to leadership—and fostering a culture of diversity is increasing the bottom line. The 6th annual Women's Global Leadership Conference in Energy and Technology was created by Alexandra Pruner, CFO of energy investment firm Tudor Pickering Holt.
"Think a number of us recognize that companies with diverse leadership tend to outperform others, so we thought it was very important to engage women in discussion of how they lead their companies. And then second, energy is such an obviously important natural resource and increasingly a lynchpin in the geopolitical makeup of our globe, that we felt it was important for women to have the tools necessary to be stewards for not only the companies but the globe's natural resources and geopolitical concerns."
One of the workshops is called "Leveraging Gender Differences."
"I think there's, you know, years ago it was out of vogue to recognize that there are inherent differences, and I think as the business community has evolved there is a recognition that each brings something different to the table, and in fact that provides for greater productivity if companies are able to bring together diverse views and how they manage the company, and one of those diverse views very often is female versus male perspectives in terms of working together."
Pruner says studies show that fortune 500 companies with more women on their board outperform those who do not. The two-day 6th annual Women's Global Leadership Conference begins tomorrow at the downtown Hilton Americas. Ed Mayberry, KUHF-Houston Public Radio News.
