Decision Time for Voters

If you want to get an early jump on the November third election, now is the time to do it. Early voting is underway in the Houston area. Election officials anticipate turnout to be brisk as a new Houston mayor will dominate local activity at the polls. Pat Hernandez has the story.

Campaign worker: "Please cast the vote for Peter Brown...Peter Brown."

It's almost the noon hour and early voters on their way to the Metropolitan Service Center in mid-town walk past campaign workers reminding them who to cast their ballot for.

Kevin Mauzy is chief deputy for Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufman. He says the early numbers look good and is encouraging registered voters to take advantage of the opportunity.

"You can vote at any of the 37 early voting locations that we have, but on election day, you would need to vote at your precinct."

Mauzy says it won't come as a surprise if the November election leads to a number of run-off races in December.

"For several races. Among them, the controller's a possibility, the mayor's a possibility, and there's several at-large city council seats that are up and have a number of candidates running, so there's a good possibility there may be a run-off there too."

Besides the city races, there are eleven state issues on the ballot that will draw attention. One in particular is Proposition-4, which if passed, could help the University of Houston achieve Tier-One status.

People I talked to had their reasons for voting early.

Female voter : "I'm busy the next couple of weeks, so I wanted to make sure and check this off my list."

Male voter : "I'm pretty set in my ways and who I'd like to support, and will follow the horse race."

Female voter : "I'm hoping that this race has enough interest that will get more voters out."

Early voting ends October 30th. You can find your early voting location at http://www.harrisvotes.org/docs/earlyvotinglocations_schedule_Nov2008_ENG.pdf.
