Cornyn says he will introduce several amendments to reduce the role of government in health care reform. Cornyn says the proposal as it stands would put 2.5 million Texans on Medicaid. And impose 350 billion dollars in new taxes. In his opening remarks to the Finance Committee, Cornyn said he has little hope that a few amendments will be able to change that.
"As the bill moves across the floor I'm concerned that it will not move in the direction of more choice and lower cost but one that will lurch to the left in a way that will result in higher costs and less choices for the American people."
Cornyn added he is against fining individuals who do not purchase health insurance. And opposes employer mandates — adding one grocery chain in Texas would have to come up with 10 million dollars to meet requirements. Cornyn also wants more to be done on tort reform. Committee members have more than 550 amendments to debate before voting on a final bill.
