Houston's 2009-2010 arts season gets underway this week with the first performances of the new year by two of the city's major arts organizations. Houston Symphony Music Director Hans Graf, spoke recently with KUHF's Dean Dalton at his home in Salzburg, Austria. Maestro Graf will be here in the Bayou City this Saturday evening at 7:30 … on-stage at Jones Hall, to conduct the Houston Symphony in its gala 2009 Opening Night concert, featuring Igor Stravinsky's 1919 Ballet Suite, The Firebird, and Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto with Emanuel Ax as the soloist … plus a preview of the Symphony's complete NASA-video-enhanced performance of Gustav Holst's The Planets, coming up in January of 2010. KUHF's Meghan Hendley heads over to he Lawndale Art Center for a conversations with Romanian-born Houston artist, Adela Andea, about her computerized light-sculpture, The Green (trade-mark) Cyber Web and Joe and Jahjehan Bath Ives showed us their video-enhanced domestic environmental installation, Me, Mine, and Not Yours. Those are two of the four exhibitions that are on display through September 26th at Lawndale, and which will be available for viewing this Saturday from 10:00AM - 5:00PM, when Lawndale serves as one of the 17 host institutions for the 13th annual Open House known as Houston Museum District Day. Principal Dancer Sara Webb and corps de ballet member Joseph Walsh appear as the romantic lead couple, Manon and Des Grieux, in Houston Ballet's revival of its production of Sir Kenneth MacMillan's full-length dance piece, Manon.  It opens the company's 40th Anniversary Season, with performances this Thursday and Saturday evening at 7:30PM, a matinee at 2:00PM Sunday afternoon and three more shows next weekend in the Brown Theater of downtown Houston's Wortham Center.
