Mexico's Dual Anniversaries to be Celebrated Here

Mayor Bill White and Consul General of Mexico Carlos Gonzales Magallon made the official announcement today at city hall. Gonzales Magallon said perhaps an official from another country shouldn't use the word invasion, but that's pretty much what's planned.
"We're going to inundate you with art, folk lore, music, exhibits, an array of wonderful performers and individuals are going to be visiting Houston very, very soon."
Houston not only has a large Mexican-American population but of the seven million Mexicans who come to Texas each year almost 6-in-10 come to Houston.
In addition White says we have much in common with Mexico and art and culture help to showcase the similarities.
"That's the purpose of culture and arts to communicate across languages, across geographical areas, across cultures to share in our common humanity."
More than 50 local organizations will be taking part with the first event Thursday night at the Menil Collection. There is a website that lists the events. It will be updated throughout the year.
