There are a number of benchmarks that must be meet to achieve Tier-One status and research awards of this magnitude is on of them. Donald Birx is vice chancellor for research and says Tier-One has far reaching effects.
"It's a measure of the university and how it relates in its importance and role within the community, nation and international settings."
Over the last few years the amount of research awards has increased steadily at the U of H. Birx says while the $100-million plus mark is an accumulation of individual awards a university doesn't surpass this kind of milestone without a team effort.
"It's faculty, sometimes individually, sometimes in collective groups working on research that's of a competitive nature that has a profound impact on the nation and the community and is competitively analyzed against others that are doing the same or like work across the country or even internationally."
A total of 314 faculty members received research awards in fiscal year 2009.
UT Austin and Texas A&M are currently the only Tier-One schools in the state.
