HISD Interim List is Shortened

The HISD school board is using this week to narrow down its list of superintendent candidates with the start of the new school year just around the corner. Pat Hernandez has the latest.

The board has interviewed eleven candidates over the past few weeks. Trustee Harvin Moore says he's been impressed so far.

"We've had a fantastic group of candidates, a better group than we had five years ago, I think, but far and I feel like I can guarantee that people are just going to be delighted with our choice when we make it. I just feel that good about where we are in the process."

Dr. Abe Saavedra will step-down as superintendent on August 31st. Moore says an interim superintendent will have no trouble leading the district until a permanent replacement is hired.

"It's really a pretty smoothly-running district. The superintendent is very important as a leader, but at the same time there's a very strong set of direct reports and there will be no problem with an interim superintendent coming in on the day that Abe leaves if we do not have a new superintendent on that date. I doubt we will, but I also doubt that it will be very long that we go with an interim superintendent. I do believe we're close and I think that everything will work very smoothly."

The district won't say who has been interviewed for the job and plans to announce only the name of the person that HISD actually hires.
