Patriots by the Lake

This unique resort style subdivision for veterans is still on the drawing boards but it already has a name: Patriots by the Lake. It'll be located on 91 acres of waterfront property the Housing Authority recently bought in northeast Harris County. Housing Authority Chief Operating Officer Marvalette Hunter says Patriots by the Lake will be just like any other master-planned community.
"This community will be a mixed use community, so it will provide housing, it will provide quality health care services, it will provide other amenities and support services that veterans need, and it will also provide opportunities for employment for veterans and their families."
Hunter says the neighborhood will be designed with veterans in mind, but by law they can't discriminate, which means anyone who can afford it will be able to buy a home there at prices starting at about 175 thousand dollars. The development will feature an array of services including health care, and no lake-front community is complete without a marina.
"That marina district will have restaurants and shops. And there'll be a boardwalk. There will be residential units above, kind of a mixed use marina district there, for recreation as well."
Hunter says some public money will be used to build Patriots by the Lake, but they're also seeking private donations.
"We project that about 160 million dollars will be needed to initiate Phase One. Not all of that will be fund-raising. Some of it will be financed of course. But we see that if we're at least one third of the way there with our funds we'll be able to start, because a large part of the 160 million is funds that will be financed."
Hunter says building a nice community for veterans is the least they can do for people who've served their country in uniform, and they hope to start building it in July of next year. For more information and how to make a donation, visit the Patriots by the Lake website.
