Traffic Alerts Save Time and Money

Transtar was the first collaboration of its kind; four government agencies combining their efforts at one location to manage traffic. Transtar manages traffic problems and passes traffic information to the public.
Transtar's Dinah Massie says it is estimated that last year motorists saved 11-point-eight million vehicle-hours.
"That's the time in the car that without Transtar travelers and drivers would experience. If you recall immediately after hurricane Ike how bad traffic was. Part of that was that people didn't have access to information about what was going on the roads."
Transtar uses cameras and sensors to gather real time information about traffic flow. Massie says they make that information public in three ways.
"First is through media like yourself, KUHF, but we also have a web site where millions of people access our travel information, and we also provide online subscriptions to e-alerts."
The agencies the make up Transtar are the Texas Department of Transportation, METRO, Harris County and the City of Houston.
