UH Moment: "GEMI"

How do you prepare students for professions in the Energy industry?  You bring the energy industry to them. Listen to this week's UH Moment.
The Global Energy Management Institute or GEMI at the UH Bauer College of Business is recognized for its program that harnesses resources in the energy capital of the world to benefit the future human capital of the business.  Craig Pirrong is professor and director of energy markets for GEMI.

Professor Craig Pirrong"It was essential the university and Bauer College  play to its strength and the strengths of Houston," said Pirrong.  "We created an initiative that was going to provide thought leadership for the energy industry here in Houston and at the same time provide a place to exchange ideas between the university and industry."

The thought leadership comes in the form of multi-disciplinary educational programs folded into current curriculum, like the new course on carbon trading; seminars and forums that bring energy leaders together to discuss issues such as energy trading in a financial crisis, and research opportunities that bring together industry and academia to talk about the next big thing.

GEMI Logo"Perhaps the most important thing is that they hire our students," Pirrong noted.  "We get a lot of feedback from companies that recognize our students come out of college knowing something about energy and that differentiates our graduates from folks that they could hire elsewhere."

The Global Energy Management Institute is part of what's happening at the University of Houston.  I'm Marisa Ramirez.
