Sandra Krider is a Houston attorney whose firm represented Douglas Spector who claimed he'd paid a premium price for a handicapped accessible cabin but that Norwegian Cruise Line failed to configure restaurants, elevators and other facilities in violation of the ADA. Sandra Krider says the 5-4 ruling is does not resolve a number of specific issues.
Michael Crye with the International Council of Cruise Lines says the group is pleased because justices indicated wholesale changes are not required.
The high court ruling says Congress intended the 1990 AmericanS with Disabilities Act to apply to cruise lines. The case was an appeal from the fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled in January that foreign-flag cruise ships are not covered by the ADA. The disabled passengers who sued may now proceed to trial to prove discrimination.
