The 800-foot Yasa Golden Dardanelles went aground in sand on Friday about 22-miles offshore from Galveston. At the time it was waiting for a Houston Ship Channel pilot to arrive.
Coast Guard Petty Office Rene Aiello says lightering process is underway.
"What actually will happen is another vessel will pull up along the grounded tank ship and begin to slowly offload the content, the cargo of that ship, in an attempt to make it lighter and re-float the vessel."
Aiello says the tanker is carrying 621-thousand barrels of low sulfur fuel oil.
"The ship has not leaked any of its content, any of its cargo. We've been very closely monitoring that situation, keeping and eye on the levels of everything on board and as of right now no pollution has been emitted from the vessel"
Aiello says the ship and its crew are safe and it is not blocking any ship traffic so work can proceed slowly and safely.
