UH Coming Soon to Pearland

The city of Pearland has been in the news lately with the abduction of a woman at gunpoint. But while you normally don't hear much about Pearland, it has quietly turned into one of the fastest growing cities in the state. And it will soon be the home of a University of Houston branch campus. Bill Stamps has details.
It's hard to go anywhere in Pearland these days without hearing that sound — the sound of construction crews working on the latest project. Last summer it was the Pearland Town Center. Currently, it's new shopping center going up in Shadow Creek. You've probably seen the big statues of the Presidents there right along the 518.

"Most people that move here are well educated, have a good job and make good money and they want to come here and buy their dream home."

Tom Reid is Pearland's Mayor. It's not just new homes and shopping centers that are being built here; crews will soon begin working on the University of Houston at Pearland. Mayo Reid couldn't be more proud.

"Pearland geographically is an ideal location. It is a place that's easy to get to right off the beltway. It has the type of demographics that would need further education—higher education."

UH Pearland will be located on the east side of the city at Pearland parkway and McHard road. The city will donate the land and build the facility. UH will pay for the rest. It wasn't long ago that much of the city was big, wooded, vacant areas. People who live in Pearland know that has changed real fast.

"Forbes magazine in 2007 said we were the 34th fastest growing community in the United States. The 9th fastest in Texas. And I believe it because of the growth that we've been experiencing. In 2000, we had 37-thousand people. Today, we have living in Pearland 126 thousand people."

And those people should have a new place to attend college when UH Pearland is completed sometime next year.
