Fewer Texans Plan Holiday Travel

Triple A Texas projects there will be a 2.1% decline in travel in Texas during the two-week Christmas/New Year's period. But AAA's Sarah Schimmer says there will still be a lot of people going over the river and through the woods.
"5.1 million Texans are expected to travel in total. 4.1 million are expected to drive, about 470-thousand are expected to fly and around 128-thousand will travel by bus, cruise ship or train."
Texas is second only to California in the number of holiday travelers this year. And while holiday travel will be down this Christmas, 2008 is still the third highest since 2000.
Shimmer says those hitting the roads will pay less for gas then most others.
"During the Christmas season Texas is one of only seven states that's offering an average price of gas at around $1.55 or less, so Texas is offering some of the cheapest gas in the nation during this Christmas travel season."
