Shuttle Sightings in Houston

Many people driving near around the 45 freeway and the NASA area got a big surprise this afternoon when they looked up into the sky. What did they see? Bill Stamps has the story.

Anyone in the area of Ellington Field or NASA who happened to be outside around noon…may have seen the most famous flying object in the world pass by. The space shuttle and the 747 it's piggy-backing on flew so low most thought it landed. That's why Jack and Francis Clanton pulled over at Ellington Field.

"All I saw was the shuttle above the trees, so I know that the plane had to have landed because there wasn't any room for anything underneath that."

Jack says he was driving when he looked up and couldn't believe what he saw.

"He was right up over us."

"So you're just driving and..."

"Yeah, it was right in front of us, about 400 feet high."

About a dozen or so people stood by a fence facing the runway at Ellington hoping the shuttle would taxi by. Little did they know that the space vehicle wasn't there. It turns out the shuttle flew low over the Johnson Space center So all the folks at NASA could see it.

Bill Johnson is one of those who waited and waited by the fence.

"I was on highway 3 coming this way and it flew over and it was landing."

It was pretty cold and windy out there…so after waiting for more than fifteen minutes most people headed back to their cars. I asked the Clantons.Where you going? Going home they said.
