Grammy Giving to the Gulf

Among the Hurricane Ike damage at Central Middle School in Galveston is a total loss of the school's musical instruments. To help get music playing again for the school's students, an instrument collection drive is underway. Rod Rice reports.
The instrument drive is the work of the Recording Academy Texas Chapter. Therese Jenkins is the Executive Director.

"Because we cover the whole state, we're going to go to each major city and designate an afternoon where people can come and drop off their old instruments."

This began in Houston at the Latin Grammy's as a fund drive. Today in Dallas is the first effort to collect instruments.

"If it's an old instrument, we have some companies that are going to refurbish it. And then in January we're going to do a caravan heading back to Galveston to Central Middle School and to arrive there to a pep rally and present them with the money and the instruments."

Jenkins says anyone in the Houston area who'd like to contribute an instrument can do so at the Sugar Hill Studio on Brock Street.
