Recycling Trees Could Save The City Money

In a recycled nut shell, the programs will work like this: heavy trash pick-up will be one month and tree trash will be picked up the alternating month. Marina Joseph with the Solid Waste Management Department says the first tree waste will be picked up in November.
"During the tree waste months we will take what is called "clean wood waste". That consists of tree limbs, branches and stumps. Items like lumber, furniture or treated wood will not be accepted."
Joseph says there is limit to the amount of junk that will be picked up each month.
"Residents are limited to eight cubic yards, which is basically two pick-up trucks full, per monthly collection. So, we don't want a whole house out there to pick up."
Residents will be getting letters explaining the program within a couple weeks. Heavy trash day will now be called "Junk Waste" and exclude tree waste as of October. Again, the first tree waste pick-ups will begin in November.
A pilot program started last fall diverted more than 58-hundred tons of tree waste from landfills saving the city more than 185-thousand dollars.
