Fruitful Fourth For Galveston

It seems a lot of people decided to spend the holiday weekend close to home. Rod Rice reports that business was good on the island.

"Tons of people down here and it's been, I don't know, three or four years, probably, since we've seen this kind of crowd on the 4th of July."

Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis the beaches were crowded for most of the long weekend.

"Friday on the 4th there was a big crowd that came out early, I mean nine, ten in the morning we already had good crowds out here. Saturday was just very, very busy, tons of people everywhere and they stayed late. Sunday was surprisingly slow. Yesterday was a bit slower."

Davis says from his perspective it looked as if a lot of people were local and everybody was pretty well behaved too.

"We didn't have a lot of problems with the crowds out here and we didn't seem to have that heavy drinking crowd that we used to get."

No drownings or major medical problems either.

Davis says local businesses seemed to be doing well too.

"On the island here it seemed like a really nice 4th of July weekend."
