Everyone Should Remember This Number

The United Way says its 211 help line is a must-have emergency number in a time of crisis. The agency says it wants residents to know that the number helps residents prepare for hurricane season.
The memories of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita still vivid for many local residents, but the 2-1-1 Texas United Way HELPLINE played a pivotal role during the response and recovery.

"2-1-1 Texas United Way line is absolutely an essential service."

Anna Neeson is vice president of donor relations for the United Way. She says 211 is connected to the Special Transportation Registry created by the state of Texas to gather critical information from people with special needs.

"When someone dials 211 they are connected right here with the United Way and we will refer them to non-profit and govenment organizations in this community that can provide that service."

But she says less than twenty-five percent of people in the area know about 211. Tony Speller with Comcast says they'd like to change that.

"It's part of a three year commitment, seventy-five thousand dollars for the next three years to help out with the United Way 2-1-1 HELPLINE."

"People call us and we figure out the best way to help them."
