Dr. Borneman is an educator. It's his life, it's what he loves to do and it's what brought him to Houston in 1984. With a freshly minted degree in Education from Indiana University, He was recruited by Houston I.S.D. After a year, he moved to Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D., where's been ever since. He's furthered his own education at the University of Houston, where he received a Masters and a Ed.D. Dr. Borneman says his passion for education was first realized as a child as he describes in his essay for KUHF's This I Believe.

Grant claims Texas and Louisiana as home, but currently, he's living and working in the Washington D. C. area. While living in Houston, he attended and graduated from the University of Houston. Grant says that's where he grew to appreciate the importance of service to others. Grant says serving others helps give his own life a deeper meaning, as he explains in his essay for KUHF's This I Believe.

Wayne was born in Boston, Massachusetts and was raised in the northeast, but once he became a geologist, he moved to Texas to work in oil exploration. Wayne did graduate work at Texas A & M University and has lived in Houston since 1986. Wayne and his wife have two daughters and his role as a parent is the focus of his essay for Houston Public Radio's This I Believe.


KUHF-Houston Public Radio's "This I Believe" with Peyman Pakzaban, M.D.

Peyman Pakzaban is a Neurosurgeon practicing in the Houston area. Peyman and his wife moved to Houston ten years ago and they have two daughters. Dr. Pakzaban says being a physician and a father, he encounters a lot tears. He believes those tears represent much more than pain or joy. He says human tears are proof to him of a human soul.

Paul Nevels remembers visiting his Grandparents home in Louisiana and looking out their second story window. What he saw was a beautifully landscaped neighborhood filled with trees, dotted with flowers and highlighted with small town life. Seth Batiste is a native Houstonian, and he's attempting to complete his Ed.D. at the University of Houston. Seth has overcome many obstacles in his life and has learned that when you're given a "second chance" at anything, it's a gift and it deserves a second effort.

Lacrecia was born in St. Joseph's Hospital in downtown Houston and has called Sugar Land home all her life. After graduating from the University of Houston with a degree in advertising, she went to work and is currently the Web Site and Marketing Director for a locally based retail chain. In her essay, Lacrecia expresses her belief in the importance of being counted.....and participating in every election.

John F. Burke moved to Texas from Pennsylvania in 1985. Since then, the Professor of Political Science at the University of St. Thomas has blended the many cultures of his youth in Pennsylvania with those of his new homeland of Texas. Professor Burke says his experience is similar to many of us living in the Houston area and the resulting diversity is a great reward.

Mauricio is a 20 year old college student pursuing a biology degree.  His hope is to become a medical doctor, like both his parents.  Mauricio is a native of Houston, but has just recently moved to Orlando where his parents now live.  Mauricio will be attending Central Florida University.  Mauricio's essay for This I Believe is a result of a college writing class.

John is a native of Tampa, Florida but he has lived in Houston for the last decade with his wife, who is a native Houstonian.  John's essay is about a personal loss that involves a unique and defining memory.

Lila Jarrow is a 2nd grade teacher in the Houston Independent School District. She's the mother of two grown children and loves her family, her job and her life. Chelsea is a Houston native and today, lives in Dickinson in Galveston County. Chelsea is a budget analyst with a NASA contractor at the Johnson Space Center. She says it truly is an exciting place to work and she's proud to be a part of such a great team. Chelsea's essay was born many years ago in grade school. The essay pays tribute to her third grade teacher and it's a reminder of the power of simple gestures and how little things can make a big difference. Adriana is a 17 year old senior at Challenge Early College High School. It's associated with Houston Community College and when Adriana graduates in the spring, she'll not only receive her high school diploma but also an Associates Degree. Adriana's essay is about her grandmother's struggle with Alzheimer's. Adriana is realizing how the disease affects the entire family and how precious time can be.

Dr. Jennings has been an English professor and creative writing instructor at San Jacinto Junior College for more than 25 years. She says the work is challenging, but ultimately rewarding. In her essay, she recalls an interesting student and how he benefited from the power of narrative.

Bill works with his father in their geosciences consulting firm here in Houston. Bill has a full schedule with work and family obligations, but he still finds time to volunteer. Chase was born in Hannibal, Missouri but moved to Houston with his parents when he was just a year old. He is a product of Houston I.S.D. and is now entering his senior year at the University of Houston pursuing an engineering degree. Chase also works in the hospitality industry to pay his way. That work has also opened his world to new friends including one particular colleague who gave Chase a new perspective about friendship.

Gail was born in Virginia, but attended high school and college in Arizona. Gail has lived in many places in the in the world, still the mountains of Flagstaff, where she was a student at Northern Arizona University, remain special. She's penned a book with more in the works plus numerous magazine and newspaper articles, but she says her greatest accomplishment is her family...specifically her four children.

Linda moved to Houston in 1973 from Iowa. She was pursuing her career in medical social-work. She enjoyed that work and did it for many years...but knew there needed to be more. In the late 80's, Linda was introduced to sailing and it literally changed her life. She fell in love with the water and charted a new career. Linda started a specialty company that refinishes and varnishes the woodwork on pleasure craft. She calls herself a "blue-collar laborer" and loves the work and can't imagine doing anything else. Carey came to Houston a couple of years ago from Georgia, but he's lived in many places, both here and abroad. Carey is a writer and an editor and he has a real passion for words and the power they can bring. Carey has an engaging personality and makes an effort to find the positives in life. He's reached an age where he's begun to look back on his life and assess all the good and bad. He admits the process is ongoing and it's not always pleasant, but on balance...he says he likes what he's found.

Ray is a native Houstonian...in fact, he's a fifth generation Houstonian with the family tree reaching back to Germany. The graduate of Lamar High School and the University of Texas found professional success in the hotel and real estate business. Ray believes he has plenty to be thankful for...his health, his two children, his five grandchildren and his hometown of Houston.
