KUHF Chamber Music Ensemble Concert, April 20

The MFAH Rienzi will host a reception and performance of the KUHF Chamber Music Ensemble featuring music of the Late Romantic period. KUHF Houston Public Radio raised $939,482 during its Spring 2009 on-air fundraising campaign which ended Friday morning, April 3. The final total represents 4.4% over goal with donations from 2338 new members and 4025 renewing members, and includes individual and corporate challenge grants used during the course of the campaign.


Front Row Live at Discovery Green

Join The Front Row team for a live broadcast as they take KUHF's daily performing arts show on the road to Discovery Green's outdoor stage on Friday, March 6 from 12-1 pm. This is the first time all KUHF listeners will have the opportunity to be in the audience and witness first hand the production of a live show. Plus, we'll have great prize drawings for the audience! The program will feature several performances including Asleep at the Wheel, The Invincible Czars and musicians from Houston Young Artists. Admission is Free.


Live Broadcast of HGO's New Production, Chorus!

KUHF has teamed up with Houston Grand Opera to offer the upcoming live broadcast of Chorus!at 7:30pm on Saturday, February 7, with St.John Flynn as host.


In Honor of Black History Month - Sundays at 7pm & 8pm

Sunday evenings throughout the month of February, KUHF will broadcast two, hour-long special programs paying tribute to Black History Month. Each 7pm hour will feature a talk special; followed by an 8pm music program. Honoring the rich history of the African-American story, the programs will highlight a variety of people and topics from Martin Luther King, women of the Harlem Renaissance to Kool & the Gang.

This year-end special will air on Saturday, December 27 starting at 9am on KUHF and will feature some of the most memorable stories and voices in public radio from the past year.  Peter Sagal of NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! and Fred Child of American Public Media's Performance Today will be your hosts for this three hour program.


Upcoming Holiday Programs on KUHF

KUHF kicks of the holiday season with special programming beginning on December 17 with the Houston Symphony's A Very Merry Pops!  A mix of offerings provides listeners the best in holiday-themed classical music as well as spoken word presentations. Classical selections chosen specially to reflect the season will also be added to regular KUHF music programming.


The Science at the Solstice Lecture Series Presents Dr. John Lienhard

Dr. John H. Lienhard will present Aeroplanes In & Out of World War I: Looking for the TRUE Mother of Invention, the 2008 talk in The Joseph Priestley Lecture Series: Science at the Solstice.  Dr. Lienhard will focus his presentation on the early days of flight when creative imaginations and invention turned the "aeroplane" from a novelty into the airplane that helped win World War I. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.


Special Broadcast of HGO's La bohème

Passionate romance, jealousy and redemption, humor and tragedy - Giacomo Puccini's La bohème has all the elements of a classic love story.  KUHF is proud to present a special broadcast of Houston Grand Opera's recent production of La bohème featuring HGO Studio alumna, Ana María Martínez and tenor, Garrett Sorenson.  The program airs on 88.7 FM and HD-1 at 8 pm on Thursday, October 16th, immediately following Evening Concert.


Via Colori - November 22nd and 23rd

Over 175 artists will gather in downtown Houston to paint the town red—and every other color of the rainbow—during Via Colori®, November 22nd and 23rd. This free two-day festival is organized by The Center for Hearing. Children are invited to visit the KUHF table on Saturday to create holiday ornaments out of recycled CDs during the festival.


"The Front Row" Live at Discovery Green

NPR Explores Houston’s Contemporary Classical Music Scene

NPR’s National Correspondent Wade Goodwyn has some nice things to say about Houston’s vibrant contemporary classical music scene in a report broadcast to the world on All Things Considered. In the report, Goodwyn also pays tribute to KUHF-Houston Public Radio for its long-standing commitment to local arts and specifically, classical music. Houston Symphony Pops Broadcasts

KUHF Houston Public Radio and the Houston Symphony team up this month to bring listeners broadcasts of the Houston Symphony’s Pops Series concerts featuring Pink Martini’s unique blend of classical, jazz, and Latin music, romantic songs with Ann Hampton Callaway, and soulful sounds that take you back to the golden age of Motown. The series will air Saturday nights at 7pm.


Star-Spangled Salute

KUHF brings you the best seat in the house as we present the live broadcast of the Houston Symphony’s Star-Spangled Salute Independence Day Concert. KUHF’s own Bob Stevenson will bring you all the old patriotic favorites as Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski takes to the stage of the Miller Outdoor Theater this Friday, July 4 at 8:00 p.m.


KUHF and Texas Music Festival Present a Panel Discussion on Entrepreneurship and Classical Musicians

The discussion takes place at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music (Choral Recital Hall, Rm. #160) at 3:30pm on Thursday, June 19th. Admission is free and the public is invited.


Debra Winger Debuts Her First Book at the MFAH on June 12th

A Conversation with Debra Winger includes a reading from her new book Undiscovered, as well as an audience Q&A session, book-signing, and reception. KUHF's Regina Scruggs moderates the discussion on June 12th at 8:00 PM in the MFAH's Brown Auditorium.


River Oaks Chamber Orchestra Presents World Premiere

Music based on the program of John Lienhard’s Engines of Our Ingenuity

The River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO) will proudly present the World Premiere of Brad Sayles’ Echoes of Invention for Narrator and Orchestra on Saturday, May 3rd at 5 p.m. at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church. A second concert will be performed on Sunday May 4th at 6:30 p.m. at the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston‘s American decorative and fine arts center. The premiere is based on John Lienhard’s popular series “Engines of our Ingenuity” and the main theme is “Ghost in the Book.” Joel Smirnoff will conduct. Like Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, this new piece will overlay John Lienhard’s exploration of spirits with Sayles’ music.


This American Life Host Ira Glass Presents Live Event on the Big Screen

This American Life, presents a live show via satellite linking select movie theatres nationwide. Host Ira Glass will give viewers an exclusive look at never-before-seen stories and outtakes from the second season of the show’s critically-acclaimed television series, produce a segment for the radio show live, and answer questions from the nationwide audience. This American Life - Live! will originate at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of New York University and will be broadcast in high definition live to theatres nationwide on Thursday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m.
